A power socket in the bathroom: super handy, or actually even indispensable. For example, for your hairdryer, straightener or shaver. But water and electricity are not exactly a golden combination. When is it safe and when is it not? Read on and you will know how to use electricity in the bathroom.

Earth leakage switch or no earth leakage switch?

Do you live in an older house? Then you may not have an earth leakage switch. You will find the earth leakage switch in the fuse box. It is often a switch, sometimes a large rotary switch. Such a switch ensures that the power is switched off automatically when a short circuit occurs. If your home does not have an RCD, we do not recommend a socket in the bathroom anyway. The risk of short-circuiting is then too high, which can lead to fire or injury.

Bathroom socket placement rules

Actually, installing a socket in the Bathroom or Shower is not difficult at all. Observe the rules below:

  • There must be an earth leakage switch in the house
  • The socket must be earthed
  • The socket must be at least 60 cm from a wet area (Shower, Bath and Sink) and at least 25 cm from the floor surface.

Connecting Bathroom Socket

You now know whether it is possible to install a socket in your bathroom. Looking for an extra safe place? Then consider a socket in a bathroom cabinet. At Maxaro you will find various sockets designed to be placed in drawers or cabinets. If there is not yet a socket connection in the bathroom, it should be made first. Installing a surface-mounted socket is no big job. In five steps, your socket is ready for use. However, don't forget your own safety and therefore switch off the power when you are doing DIY.

Step1:
First, check whether it is possible to install a new socket on that group. A maximum of eight sockets per group is recommended. You can easily count this by switching on all the lights and then changing the fuses. This way, you also immediately check which fuse group your bathroom belongs to.

Step 2:
Determine the suitable location for the socket, using the rules above. As you will be flushing the socket, a cable will run through the bathroom. Consider the most attractive route for this cable. If you are going to renovate, you may have the option of trenching. All the cables will be nicely tucked away this way!

Step 3:
Remove power from the group in which the 'drain' socket is located. Disconnect the socket you want to branch off. Then cut the blue, yellow/green and brown wire to the required length and strip the ends with a stripper.

Step 4:
Now connect the cables to the 'drain' socket. The yellow/green wire always comes in the middle, the other two at random on the outside. Pull the wires to where the new socket should be and connect to it in the same way. Work the wires away with an electricity channel.

Step 5:
Attach the socket to the wall and check that it works. Now the socket is ready for use!
